Ten thousand hours

This chain ends at a real study, conducted carefully and published in a serious journal. What changed on the way out was the grammar: an average became a threshold.

The claim is that roughly ten thousand hours of practice are required to reach expert performance in a field. It is one of the few empirical results from psychology that most people can state from memory, which makes it a useful case: the chain is short, every step is documented, and the distortion happens at an identifiable point.

    What the paper reports

    The best-rated group had accumulated an estimated average of about ten thousand hours by roughly age twenty. It is a group mean. No threshold was identified, and no claim was made that the figure was necessary or sufficient.

What the average conceals

An average implies dispersion. Roughly half the top group had accumulated fewer hours than the figure, and roughly half more. Anders Ericsson made this point repeatedly, together with two others: the study concerned a single domain with an unusually well-defined training tradition, and the practice it measured was what he termed deliberate practice — effortful work on specific weaknesses, with feedback, at the edge of current ability. Ordinary repetition does not qualify.

Ericsson objected in print to the popular version, most extensively in Peak, written with Robert Pool. His position was that the round number was not his, that the threshold framing was a misreading, and that the domains to which the figure had been extended were not comparable to instrumental music.

The distortion was not a fabrication. It was a change of grammar: a mean reported for one group in one domain became a requirement stated for everyone in every domain.

What later work found

In 2014, Brooke Macnamara, David Hambrick and Frederick Oswald published a meta-analysis in Psychological Science examining how much variance in performance deliberate practice accounted for across domains. The share was substantial in games and music, smaller in sports, smaller again in education, and close to negligible in professional occupations.

That result was itself contested. Ericsson argued that many of the studies pooled had measured practice loosely, counting hours of any activity rather than deliberate practice as defined, and that pooling those with well-measured studies would drive the estimate down regardless of the truth. Hambrick and Macnamara replied that a construct which can only be measured under conditions its proponents specify after the fact is difficult to falsify. The exchange is published and both sides can be read.

Where the record stands

The 1993 study exists and has not been retracted or overturned. Its finding — that accumulated deliberate practice differed substantially between skill groups in a music academy — is not in serious dispute. What is in dispute is how much of the variation in performance practice accounts for, and how far the pattern extends beyond domains with structured training traditions.
